Leaves will rot in there and rest on the joists eventually rotting the boards. Sweep the surface of the deck. Uv rays penetrate wood which causes graying. Pay particular attention to the spaces between boards.

Fill a garden sprayer with deck cleaner and water. Then wash the deck using a power washer to scrub the surface clean. Mix the water and the cleaner according to the instructions. Lack of preparation is the most common reason for deck stains and sealers to fail.

Before you apply stain make sure the surface is clean no dust dirt wood fibers or grease dry and free from mildew.
